Bunker Stout, former cop, Marine sniper, and private investigator works out of Okaloosa Island, Florida. He is asked to investigate a cold case murder committed by a current Florida resident who is linked to the Mafia. The murder occurred in the Mississippi Delta years ago, but the murderer escaped justice and fled to Florida where he became a doctor to an organized crime family in the Panhandle. The doctor made a pact with the devil at the Crossroads near Clarksdale, Mississippi, where the blues legend, Robert Johnson, traded his soul for fame. The doctor then murdered his wife, the mother of his children, to be with a young girl who had been his patient since she was a child. He seduced the girl on a mission trip to Central America. Corrupt officials destroy evidence and cover for him, but the local newspaper and citizens want justice for the murdered woman, who everyone loved. The organized crime family does not want their doctor arrested and will do anything to protect their investment in the doctor and his new young wife, who launder money for them and provide medical treatments for wounds that must be kept private. Assassins are sent to kill Bunker Stout and all witnesses who have information on the murder. Murder, Faustian deals, betrayal, and the supernatural lurk around every Delta cottonfield and every bend of the Big Sunflower River, and no one can be trusted in a high-stakes investigation where Bunker Stout walks a tightrope between life and death with no second chances and no room for error.
